Getting out of jail or prison

An ID, health care, food and a place to stay after release.

What to do first

  1. Get an ID. Start with a birth certificate and a Social Security card if you need them.
  2. Apply for Medicaid. You can apply any time of year.
  3. Apply for food benefits.
  4. If you got SSI or disability benefits before, call Social Security to start them again.
  5. If you have nowhere to stay tonight, call 211.
