What it is

We publish what Front Door has found in each state: county and city offices, food banks, free legal help, community action agencies, food pantries and meal sites, and the programs each state runs.

It uses the Human Services Data Specification (HSDS 3.3.1) from Open Referral. Many 211s and referral tools use this format, so they can load our records without changing them.

Each service is also coded with Open Eligibility, an open list of kinds of help, and with Front Door's own kinds of help, like Food or Housing.

The API

Each state has its own address. Use the state's two-letter code or its name, like washington:

https://localcarehub.org/api/hsds/<state>

What you can ask for

Lists come in pages. Use page (starting at 1) and per_page (50 unless you ask for fewer, 100 at most). Each page says how many items and pages there are. A page past the end comes back empty.

You can narrow services to one organization with organization_id, or to one kind of help with taxonomy_term_id.

No key is needed. Any website can call the API from a browser. Answers are saved for up to a day, so a change can take a day to show.

One file per state. Each is JSON compressed with gzip, with one list per HSDS table: organizations, services, locations, phones, schedules, addresses, service areas, languages, taxonomies, taxonomy terms and attributes.

License

Front Door's own research is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0. That covers the offices, the state programs, the descriptions we write, and how we match records to kinds of help. Please credit "Front Door (localcarehub.org)".

Records we gathered from public sources keep their source's terms. Every record names the page it came from and the date we read it.

  • Facts like names, addresses, phone numbers and hours are public facts.
  • City and county open data keep the publisher's license.
  • Lists from networks such as Feeding America, the Legal Services Corporation and community action associations are their own lists. We only link to them as the source.
  • Open Eligibility codes are CC BY-SA 3.0. HSDS itself is CC BY-SA 4.0, by Open Referral.

Check the source before you rely on a record.

How it stays current

We rebuild these files from our reviewed research every time we release Front Door.

The API reads only these files. It never reads our live database, so it stays fast for everyone.

Some updates are not in the files yet: changes made by organizations that claimed their listing, and links we fixed after a check.
