Access

Without a key, you read the free sample. With a partner key, you read everything. A wrong key gets an error; it never falls back to the sample.

Using a key

Send the key in a header on every request. You can also use X-API-Key: fdk_... if your tool cannot set Authorization.

Keep the key on your server. Never put it in a web address or in code that runs in a browser. If a key gets out, write to us and we will turn it off and send a new one.

Rate limits

Every answer tells you where you stand. Over a limit, you get 429 Too Many Requests with Retry-After, the seconds to wait. Days and months are counted in UTC.

Errors

Errors come back as JSON with a code you can act on and a sentence that says what to do.

400bad_requestA parameter is wrong, like per_page=abc.

401invalid_keyWe do not know the key, it was turned off, or it is not a Front Door key.

404not_foundNo such state, endpoint or record. Without a key, records outside the free sample are not found.

429rate_limitedToo many requests this minute or today. Wait for Retry-After.

429quota_exceededA partner key used its requests for the month.

503unavailableWe cannot check keys right now. Try again in a minute.

Versions

This is version 1.0.0. Every answer says it in X-Front-Door-API-Version.

We may add endpoints, parameters and fields at any time. Your code should ignore fields it does not know.

A change that could break your code gets a new major version. We announce it in the changelog at least 90 days before the old one stops.

Every list takes page (from 1) and per_page (50 unless you ask for fewer, 100 at most) and comes back in the HSDS page shape. A page past the end comes back empty.

Every state and DC: what Front Door has (counts by table, by kind of record and by kind of help), the free sample's counts and download, and each state's base URL. With a partner key, also the full download.

List services

Services in pages, in id order. Each comes with its organization; add full=true for everything about each one.

Parameters

state: A two-letter code (wa, dc) or the state's slug (washington, new-york).
page: The page, from 1. A page past the end is empty.
per_page: How many on a page, 50 unless you ask for fewer. Values above 100 are read as 100.
full: true for fully nested records.
organization_id: Only this organization's services.
taxonomy_term_id: Only services with this term, such as Front Door's Food term.

Without a key, a redirect to the free sample's file. Counts as one request.
