Working Families Tax Credit

Which years can you still claim?

The Working Families Tax Credit is a refund from Washington State for workers. You can still claim up to four tax years. Answer a few questions to see each year's income limit, the most it pays, and the last day to apply.

Tax year 2022 closes December 31, 2026

That is 82 days from today. Apply by then to claim the credit for 2022.

How did you file your federal tax return?

Not sure? Use what your tax return says at the top of page 1.

How many children lived with you more than half the year?

Count children the way the federal Earned Income Tax Credit does. Each child you count needs a Social Security number or an ITIN.

About how much did you earn each year, before taxes?

A rough number is fine. Leave a year empty if you are not sure.

Do you have a Social Security number or an ITIN?

The person filing needs one of these. We ask only so we can tell you if you can apply now.

Nothing you enter here is saved or sent. The page does the math on your device.

DOR also checks, for each year

  • You lived in Washington at least 183 days that year.
  • You were 25 to 64 at the end of the year, or had a qualifying child.
  • You filed a federal tax return for that year.
  • You can get the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, or could if you did not file with an ITIN.
  • You had earned income that year, like wages or self-employment.

All free tax help DOR lists

You need a filed federal tax return for each year you claim. These groups prepare returns for free:

Three ways to apply

  • Online with My DOR

    Free, in English and Spanish.

  • With tax software

Many tax software companies and preparers can send it with your return.

  • By mail

A paper form in English and 12 other languages, to mail or bring in.

You can also apply in person at 12 DOR offices. There is no way to apply by phone. For help, call DOR at 360-763-7300.

Apply once for each year. If your tax preparer or tax software already sent it, do not apply again: a second application slows down both.

Have these ready

  • A copy of your federal tax return as you filed it, with every schedule
  • Social Security numbers or ITINs and dates of birth for you, your spouse and your children
  • Your Washington driver license or ID number, if you have one
  • Your home and mailing address
  • Your bank routing and account number, if you want direct deposit

Will this affect my immigration case?

DOR's questions page says the refund could count in a public charge decision, under a federal rule that started September 18, 2026. We cannot tell you what this means for you. Talk to a free immigration legal service before you decide.

If DOR sends you a letter

Answer by the date on the letter. DOR's upload asks for the Letter ID and your last name. It does not take iPhone HEIC photos, or one-page PDFs over 1 MB. We can get your files ready on your device.
